Experience, skill and professionalism are not all decisive factors. It’s important to just be attractive and interesting.

If the requirements for the job are not high, you as a candidate will have many competitors. Most likely, the HR agents will have to choose among several candidates and personal sympathy plays a big role here.

Here’s what will help you make a great impression on your recruiter:

  • Before your job interview begins, start a small talk with your interviewers. Just say a couple of phrases about the weather, about the office, or just thank them for the invitation to an interview.
  • If the job requires analytical skills – stay serious, and if you need to work with clients – smile more often.
  • Don’t show that you’re worried.
  • Look your interviewers in the eye.
  • Speak energetically and emphatically.
  • Show that you know a lot about the employer company and tell them what you especially like in this company.
  • Estimate the approximate age of the interviewer: if he or she is from 20 to 30 years old – focus on your achievements; if from 30 to 50 – emphasize that you are creative and stress-resistant; if the recruiter is over 50 years old – tell about of your efficiency and discipline.
  • Show your interest: ask questions.
  • And also keep in mind: if a strong candidate was interviewed before you, you may be underestimated, and if a weak one – they may overestimate you. If possible, skip ahead of the one who seems less promising.
  • Appearance also matters: dress in casual style and leave expensive accessories at home – pay more attention to your hairstyle. Do not use perfume and make sure your clothes are clean.

Your social profiles and all online information on you will be checked

Just as you try to learn as much as possible about the employer, the employer HR agents try to learn as much as possible about you.

Therefore, check and tidy up your social media before applying for a job. If you think that your profile is only for you and your friends, close it from views. However, there are recruiters who may be alarmed by this.

Therefore, it is better to just clean your personal page and delete everything dubious.

You, too, can and should check the employer. Check its rating on Glassdoor and Indeed, read reviews of former employees, check its government and tax statements. Try to find social media pages of people who work there to get real reviews about the company.

You may be blacklisted

If you once applied for a vacancy in the company and did not pass the interview or aptitude test, you are on the blacklist of job seekers. This is especially true for most FMCG companies like P&G, MARS, HEINEKEN and others. They blacklist applicants who fail their psychometric tests or interview.

When interviewers ask questions like “Where do you see yourself in five years?” or “Tell us about your shortcomings”, he or she expects to hear a certain answer.

To understand how to answer these questions, take a close look at job requirements and everything that the company has indicated in the “About us” section. You need to know as much as possible about its corporate culture and values.

Your answer must be sincere and adequate. If an applicant for the position of a sales assistant says that he sees himself the CEO of the company in five years, this is alarming.

When talking about the shortcomings emphasize that you are fighting with them and have already achieved some success. And, of course, choose those flaws that will not affect the results of your work. If an applicant for the job of sales assistant says that he does not like talking on the phone, he is unlikely to be employed.

Salary negotiations start from the lowest amount

If the job ad says that the wages are “negotiable”, this means that you are to prove your value. Employers want to save money. So, the salary talks start with the lowest amount.

If a candidate does not have experience in salary negotiations and does not know the situation in the labor market, he/she has lost.

Therefore, if you apply for a vacancy without a fixed salary, first estimate your “value”. There are two tips on approaches.

First, you can simply add 10-15% to your previous salary and focus on this amount.

Secondly, you can find out the average salary of such specialists in the region. To do this, check similar job ads.

To achieve the desired salary, prove that you really are worth that much. Facts will help: your achievements in previous work and experience. But there is no need to talk about the mortgage and three children, this has nothing to do with the employer.

The principle of salary negotiations is simple: if you prove your usefulness to the company, you can dictate your terms.
