Benefits of Working in Deloitte

Deloitte is a company with a highly developed corporate culture and personnel management system.

Among the advantages of working in this company, Deloitte employees name:

  • clear career prospects
  • valuable work experience
  • high demand in the labor market
  • good team
  • valuable corporate training and internships
  • prestige of working in a company with that name
  • free corporate clubs and sports sections

The career opportunity in Deloitte is backed by numerous examples. Most of Deloitte’s top managers, including its CEO Punit Renzhen, have left the bottom of the company starting as regular auditors.

Disadvantages of Working in Deloitte

A specific feature of all large consulting and auditing companies is the enormous amount of work. The norm in these companies is daily work of 10-12 hours. Longer ours are not paid, but, on the contrary, without them in Deloitte it is impossible to comply with accepted standards and receive decent payment. Mistakes are followed by harsh criticism and payroll deductions.

According to Deloitte employees, it is difficult for them to balance their personal lives and work. Deloitte is more suitable for young people who are ready to look at the monitor from dawn to dawn every day, giving up everything else. Overwork and nervous tension from liability often lead to exhaustion and disease. In the Big 4 companies, there are frequent cases of problems with pressure, heart, eyes, nervous system in people under 30 years old. Young Deloitte employees at junior positions often do not have time for the gym, friends, dates and family, they only have work. It should be noted that the company also tries to organize leisure for employees – the company has sports sections, clubs, and lounges in offices. Team parties and holidays are often held as well.

The main problems in Deloitte for junior and middle-level employees are:

  • long working hours (60-80 hours working week with the declared 40-hour)
  • low starting salary
  • high responsibility
  • harsh criticism for mistakes
  • fines for mistakes
  • vacation can only be obtained in summer (busy “busy” season from October to May)

Pros and cons: conclusion

Summing up the list of advantages and disadvantages of working in Deloitte, its employees say that it is definitely worth getting a job in Deloitte. The main value of work experience in Deloitte is that after it it will be easy for you to get a job in any other large company of any profile. For example, if you made an audit or consultations for the metallurgical sector, it is likely that you will be hired to one of such companies very quickly to a good position. That is, as an intermediate career stage, Deloitte is one of the best options. Note that the company management knows and uses such a strategy. The new employees have a very difficult first 2-3 years, a lot of work and training is given to them.

However, according to the reviews of employees, if a valuable specialist quits Deloitte, the company helps him get a job in a new promising workplace, Deloitte gives good recommendations and tips on the employment. They know that you can become a big shot, and it is better to be friends with you.

Benefits of Working in Deloitte

So if you are young, ambitious, and willing to work 80 hours a week, you will grow rapidly in Deloitte. By the age of 30-35, there is a real opportunity (according to our estimates, the chance is 1 to 25-30) to get the status of a Deloitte partner. And this is not just a salary, it is a share of the company’s profits. The average income of a partner is about 0,5-1 million euro per year, depending on the performance of his department.

Regarding the comparison of Deloitte with other Big 4 companies and what is the difference between them, we offer you a separate article on this subject: The Big Four – PWC, E&Y, KPMG, Deloitte: everything you wanted to know

How to get a job in Deloitte

Here are the words from an interview with Deloitte Global CEO Punit Renzhen in 2015: “This year 60,000 new employees will be hired in our company. We have to consider 3.5 million resumes each year, but we will hire only 2% of all candidates.”

Regarding the qualities of an applicant, Punit Renjen noted: “In a broad sense, we look for just two aspects. The first is your academic achievements, as well as everything that you have achieved by doing beyond the compulsory program. The second aspect is personal: integrity of character, ability to work in a team and manage it, as well as contribute to the common cause. I believe that a combination of both is needed.”

According to HR employees of Deloitte, the following is required from applicants:

  • high motivation to work
  • determination
  • leadership skills
  • developed communication skills
  • professional knowledge
  • responsibility
  • ability to work both as a team and independently

Ideally you are expected to demonstrate all these qualities during the tests, assessment and interviews.

Pre-employment process stages in Deloitte

Pre-employment process stages in Deloitte

  1. Filing an application on the official website of Deloitte
  2. Testing at the company office
  3. Initial interview
  4. Final interview

Usually it takes 4-5 weeks to complete all these stages for most applicants like graduates and young specialists. But the pre-employment process in Deloitte can be much shorter for highly processional employees, managers and those graduates who took part in Deloitte internships or case-study championships. For example, winners of student case-study championships in economics like Challenedge will be invited for the final interview without having to pass the psychometric tests or assessments in Deloitte.

Filing an application

All Deloitte vacancies are posted both on large HR portals and on official website of Deloitte. We recommend using the official website of the company as this increases the chances that your profile will be noticed. First you need to register on the official Deloitte website. Create a personal account and enter data on your own: education, work experience, personal and contact information.

Filing an application on the official website of Deloitte

We recommend to follow a few advice while filing your Deloitte application:

  • make sure you meet the requirements of the vacancy you want to apply for. If the discrepancy with the requirements is large, you should not even try. Unfortunately such application will not be accepted by the automated control system;
  • fill in all necessary fields of the form, this is strongly required;
  • attach a resume and a cover letter with full information about you: university, work experience, professional qualities, projects in which you participated in your university or place of work, achievements in sports, participation in charity and social projects;
  • check your resume and cover letter for literacy, mistakes are punished by sending the application to the trash.

Much attention is paid to the university/college, if you are a graduate or student, and previous work experience, if you are a specialist. Graduates of top economic universities/schools are given a significant priority. It is important for graduates of other universities to show experience in working on case-studies, participating in targeted communities or circles.

We recommend reading our articles in the Preparation section on how to write and make your resume and cover letter visible.

Aptitude tests in Deloitte

Deloitte uses CEB SHL aptitude tests to assess intellectual abilities and personal qualities of candidates. Each Deloitte department uses its own set of psychometric tests, which consists of questions to test professional knowledge (accounting, finance, taxes), the level of knowledge of the English language, personality (situational judgement), numerical, verbal and abstract reasoning tests.

Aptitude tests in Deloitte

Important: to get a job in some departments you will need to pass all aptitude tests in English. That is, all tests will not be in your native language if you are from, for example, India, China or Russia, but in English. For most Deloitte offices, you are required to have knowledge of the English language of the level is not lower than Upper-Intermediate by TOEFL. Questions in English are also taken from TOEFL questionnaires.

Testing is carried out in the office on company computers, usually with a group of applicants.

Standard aptitude test examination in Deloitte departments

Applicants to the audit department of Deloitte are to pass the following tests (2-hour test on a computer from 6 sections):

  • a personality questionnaire about your work preferences (for example, “Everything is neatly placed in my workplace, in piles, and not lying around in a mess” answer options: “true”, “not true”, “difficult to answer”)
  • abstract reasoning test
  • situational judgement test
  • accounting test (IFRS in English, audit, taxes)
  • English language test
  • numerical + verbal reasoning test

Aptitude tests in Deloitte

The operational and strategic consulting department of Deloitte uses the following tests:

  • numerical reasoning test
  • abstract reasoning tests
  • verbal reasoning test
  • accounting test (general concepts, postings, general audit)
  • English language test
  • essay about yourself and your goals for working in Deloitte in English (Motivation letter)

Aptitude testing in the tax department of Deloitte includes 2 stages, which are carried out on different days. To get to the second stage, you must first go through the first:

Stage 1: numerical + verbal + abstract reasoning test and English proficiency test

Stage 2: professional and situational judgement tests

Deloitte aptitude testing for abstract, verbal and numerical abilities serves as a stage of testing your skills to quickly and correctly read and understand abstract figures, texts, graphs and tables. According to employee reviews, Deloitte aptitude tests are not difficult if you prepare for them.

Numerical reasoning test for Deloitte

SHL numerical reasoning tests used in Deloitte always contain graphs, tables, and charts. You won’t need to make complex calculations but only four basic actions: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, as well as the determination of ratios and percentages. We recommend revising the principles of finding ratios and percentages. If you have not solved math questions for a long time, this can cause difficulties.

Almost always, numerical reasoning tests include questions for currency conversion, so pay special attention to this when practicing. Usually you are given 60-90 seconds to solve one question, and there are 15-25 questions in a numerical reasoning test in Deloitte. In SHL tests it you may switch from one question to another and vice versa. Therefore, if some question is too difficult and it is not clear how to solve it, skip it and get down to others, and you will return to it later if there is time.

Abstract reasoning tests are pretty different comparing to numerical and verbal reasoning tests. Abstract tests can have numerous types but the most commonly used in Deloitte are:

  • odd one out
  • matrices
  • next in row

The following example of abstract reasoning test in Deloitte is next in row:

This  questionnaire is made to find more about your personal preferences and inclinations. Please find below a short part of the Deloitte personality questionnaire:

Deloitte Personality Questionnaire Example

In such personality questionnaires there are no correct or incorrect answer options. We recommend answering honestly about your preferences since this will help both you and Deloitte to make the best fit for you.

Deloitte situational judgement tests

Situational judgement tests are widely used in most Deloitte departments to predict your behavioral patterns in your future work. You must be prepared for them especially if you apply for a managerial position. These tests are also widely used in all Big 4 companies to assess candidates for promotion from junior to senior positions.

Below please see an example of a Deloitte situational judgement test for a junior position in audit.

English language test

As we indicated above, the Deloitte English language test is based on tests of the TOEFL standard and applicants are required to have the Upper-Intermediate or Advanced level. Usually there are 100 questions in the test, but the questions themselves, according to Deloitte employees, are not complicated. Usually they will include the following tasks:

insert the article or missing word in the sentence

  • correct a mistake in a sentence
  • pick up a word similar in meaning
  • relate the word and its description

English language test

The average passing mark for an English proficiency test in Deloitte is 75% of correct answers. Note that most applicants for Deloitte jobs score higher. A high score for this test is added to the overall score for all tests.

Passing score of aptitude and professional tests in Deloitte

Usually you will know the details of test criteria and passing scores before the test begins. It may sound like this: a passing score for the abstract, numerical and verbal reasoning tests is 60%, for a professional test is 70% and for a test in English is 75%. If your results were 55%, 75% and 85%, then the HR department of Deloitte usually agrees with this result and you will receive the invitation to the next stage.

If the result of the applicant is 59%, 70% and 74%, then even such a small underrun may not be enough to go to the next stage. Therefore, we recommend that you carefully prepare for testing so that your result is 80-90% for all tests and you, as a candidate for a Deloitte vacancy, are out of competition.

In most departments you will receive the results of your aptitude testing right after it, but in some it is necessary to wait from 2 to 7 days until HR specialists finish the analysis of the data of all applicants.

The current statistics of Deloitte HR agents demonstrate that up to 80% of untrained applicants get cut off during the Delotte tests stage. Those applicants who successfully pass the test receive invitations to the first interview.

Primary Deloitte interview

In recent years, this stage has been omitted in Deloitte’s regional offices and after the aptitude tests, you get an invitation to an interview with the head of the department in which you want to get a job. But in most capitals, the interview takes place in two stages:

  • primary interview with HR representative Deloitte only
  • final interview with 2-3 managers and the head of the department

The first interview will focus on the results of your tests and then on the details of your resume. Questions may sound like this:

  • What are your most significant achievements?
  • What were your most favorite and least favorite subjects at the university and why?
  • Have you taken part in educational programs, grants, student exchange programs?
  • Are you a member of any public organizations?
  • In addition to Deloitte, are you trying to get a job at other Big 4 companies now?
  • If you receive invitations from all the Big 4 companies, which one will you choose and why?
  • What attracts you in Deloitte?
  • What do you know about Deloitte and work at Deloitte?
  • What contribution can you make to Deloitte?

As you can see, most of the questions concern your personality characteristics and motivation. It’s also very important for Deloitte that you can demonstrate teamwork and focus on results.

If you can show it, you will receive an invitation to a final interview.

Deloitte interview

Final interview

The second or final Deloitte interview is an interview with the department head. This will be a more complex and lengthy conversation, which on average lasts 1-2 hours.

The questions of the final interview partly repeat the questions of the first Deloitte interview, and partly they are a test of your professional knowledge. You will receive a few questions on accounting, taxes, auditing, knowledge of the current economic situation in your country and the world.

Tips from Aptitude-Tests-Practice:

  • make sure you are up to date with the latest news that are important to the audit and consulting industries;
  • get ready to tell about yourself and what is important for you in your future work in Deloitte;
  • think about the main reasons why you want to work in Deloitte and in particular department.

During the interview, you may and should ask questions, because this is a chance for you to find out how the work in Deloitte meets your goals.

2 most common job interview mistakes

Business games and case studies

In most large offices in recent years, Deloitte has introduced a new practice for new applicants: business games and case-study works and a cocktail party.

If after the final interview you will get an invitation to another stage, it means that there are still doubts about you, and your future potential manager wants to see how you will show yourself in a particular work situation. The business game and case-study, most likely, will not be about accounting or tax issues, but about team work.

Business games and case studies

It looks like this: applicants divided into 2 or more teams receive the same case-study on the audit of some company. Next, the members of each team will have to explain the decision to the department head and managers of Deloitte, who will ask a lot of clarifying questions.

After the presentation of the case-study, follows the cocktail party. It is an informal communication event with all participants and Deloitte representatives where you will be served refreshments from the company. Everyone who participated in such parties says that the atmosphere is very friendly. Managers of the company themselves try to speak with each candidate and allow them to ask any questions about any details. Remember: in such an informal setting, HR work continues since they are looking at you and right at that moment a decision is made whether you will take a vacancy in Deloitte.

Deloitte jobs

Tip: try to show yourself as an adequate and interesting person and communicate with managers and directors, since they decide on whether or not to hire you. If they like you, within 1-2 days you will receive a call from HR and a job offer.

Remember: preparation is the key to success. It’s better to spend 3-4 days preparing for the aptitude tests and interviewing at Deloitte now, than later regret the missed opportunity for a long time. So start praticing now!
