Kraft Heinz: about the company, employment and hiring conditions, aptitude tests and interviews

Kraft Heinz is the fifth largest company in the world from the FMCG (fast moving consumer goods) industry. In early 2021, Kraft Heinz employs about 30 thousand people in 40 countries all over the world. The largest number of factories and staff of this company is in the USA.

The company was formed from the merger of two American food companies Heinz and Kraft Foods into a single corporation Kraft Heinz in 2015, but each of these companies has more than a century of history. Kraft Heinz products are supplied to 170 countries of the world, but the USA remains the largest market – almost 70% of Kraft Heinz products are sold there. Ketchup accounts for 30% of the company’s total global sales.

The company’s brand portfolio includes about 100 world famous names. The leading one is Heinz – ketchups and sauces.

Working conditions at Kraft Heinz

Kraft Heinz is one of the leading food companies in the world. The company has well-defined policies in recruiting, managing and developing employees at all levels and departments.

About 70% of all reviews of Kraft Heinz employees in the USA, Europe and Asia are positive – this is a good value. Even in the best companies, the maximum number of positive reviews does not usually exceed 80%.

Among the positive aspects of the working conditions at Kraft Heinz, its employees name the following:

  • friendly team, colleagues are ready to help;
  • comfortable psychological atmosphere;
  • clear career prospects in most departments;
  • loyal and understanding management;
  • useful work experience;

But there are also a number of problems at Kraft Heinz in the US and in the world.

Problems at Kraft Heinz

Problems have been haunting Kraft Heinz both in the global market and in some regional markets from 2017 to the present. In the United States, the top management of the company, in an attempt to overtake competitors in 2015-2018, carried out large-scale investments in marketing, product line and personnel. In a short-term distance, the company really managed to squeeze other manufacturers. Sales in 2017-2018 increased by 3%, but the price for such a minor victory was too high. The growth in sales could not even cover the investment costs in the long term.

At the end of 2017, and then in 2018 financial years, the company showed record losses of 12.1 billion US dollars, and the price of its shares at the moment fell by 25%. In addition, in the fall of 2018, the US financial regulator initiated an audit and imposed a fine on the company for incorrect accounting practices and concealment of losses.

For the United States, where stock price fluctuations usually do not exceed 2-3%, this was a disaster for the company’s management. Major rating agencies sharply downgraded the company’s credit rating, and its main beneficiary – well-known investor Warren Buffett – began to replace the company’s management.

The reason for the lingering failures in the US market, which is the company’s key market, was, first of all, a change in the dietary habits of Americans. More and more people, both in America and around the world, have begun to switch to healthy foods. And most of the Kraft Heinz products, despite their high quality, are considered not healthy for being excessively fatty and saturated with preservatives. The second reason for the problems was the company’s high debt burden. In pursuit of expansion, the management of the company collected loans, which became a serious burden for the entire business.

In 2019, sales of Kraft Heinz continued to fall, although the new management tried hard to change the situation. The changes affected the structure of the corporation, the number of personnel and the main parts of the expenditure side. At the end of 2019, the company showed the same loss – almost $14 billion.

Situation at Kraft Heinz in 2021

As of March 2021, the number of Kraft Heinz employees in the world is about 30-32 thousand people. But back in 2015, that number was about 43 thousand. The company annually laid off 2-3 thousand people all over the world, including USA and emerging markets with high sales potential. The company continues to struggle with declining global sales.

In 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, most businesses had serious problems. Restaurants and cafes, which were major consumers of the company’s products, had to close their doors for 6-10 months. But consumption shifted from restaurants to kitchens in apartments and houses, and in general, Kraft Heinz sales grew and made a profit. At the beginning of 2021, the management and employees of Kraft Heinz, after a long difficult period, are looking to the future with optimism.

Resume and cover letter

If you want to work at Kraft Heinz, then the first step is to send your resume and cover letter in response to the vacancy of this company. We’ve written a lot earlier about how to write a good resume and cover letter. Read about it in our articles.

Initial telephone/Skype interview

If your resume has been selected, you will receive a call from the Human Resources department of the Kraft Heinz division where you want to work for a short initial interview. It usually takes no more than 15 minutes and aims to check the details of your resume, your current availability, and make an overall impression of you as a person and potential employee of Kraft Heinz.

At this stage, we recommend following three simple rules for the first conversation:

  • show a sincere wish to get this job;
  • communicate that you are ready to learn new things, grow and develop at Kraft Heinz;
  • thank the interviewer for his or her time and attention.

Already at this stage, selection is carried out and applicants who fail to show themselves as adequate and professional candidates do not get invitation for the next stage. We believe that such a telephone interview will not be a problem for you, and after it you will receive a link to online psychometric testing – the next stage in the selection of applicants at Kraft Heinz.

Kraft Heinz aptitude tests

Kraft Heinz uses tests from two leading test companies – CEB SHL and Talent Q / Korn Ferry. The tests are used only for applicants for office and management positions. That is, if you are applying for a line position at the Kraft Heinz factory, then, according to our data, you will not have to take any aptitude tests. And immediately after the telephone interview you will receive an invitation for a face-to-face interview at the company’s office.

But, if you are applying for any office job, management position, or sales job, then you should prepare for the psychometric aptitude tests at Kraft Heinz. Aptitude testing at Kraft Heinz includes the following three sections:

  • aptitude tests for intellectual abilities (numerical reasoning test, verbal reasoning test and abstract reasoning test);
  • situational judgement tests;
  • personal questionnaire.

We recommend that you read our articles on CEB SHL: SHL psychometric tests

Kraft Heinz aptitude tests for intellectual abilities

The SHL and Talent Q / Korn Ferry aptitude tests for intellectual abilities are challenging questions that can become a serious obstacle for untrained candidates. The standard test consists of 10-15 numerical reasoning, verbal reasoning and abstract reasoning tests. There are usually 30-45 questions in the test. The SHL tests have a total time limit of 30-50 minutes for the entire test, and the Talent Q / Korn Ferry tests have a time limit for each question – usually 1 minute.

Situational judgement tests at Kraft Heinz

Applicants for Kraft Heinz jobs in sales, marketing and any other office and management positions, as well as internships, must pass a situational judgement test. At Kraft Heinz, special attention is paid to the personality qualities of employees and job seekers. The company tries to select people who are close in spirit to its corporate culture. To determine these qualities and competencies, situational tests and personality and motivational questionnaires are widely used.

You can learn more about situational judgement tests for executives, office staff, and sales and support staff in our following articles:

Personality questionnaires at Kraft Heinz

Personality questionnaires from SHL and Talent Q represent a set of 100-200 questions with statements. You need to select statements that work for you and do not work for you. You can see an example of such a question from SHL’s OPQ32 personality questionnaire below.

personality-opq-sample-question

As we wrote above, personality questionnaires are used at Kraft Heinz to determine how well a candidate fits the corporate culture of this company. It is much easier and cheaper for any employer to immediately find a culturally appropriate employee than to raise one within the company. That is why questionnaires and situational judgement tests are so widely used in recruiting.

Assessment at Kraft Heinz

An assessment day or, in other words, an assessment center is a qualifying stage that is used to assess the professional competence of applicants for a job at Kraft Heinz in sales and marketing. These areas are the main focus of the company.

Assessment is a group stage where you join other candidates to work as part of a group. Assessment exercises include group discussions, group or individual business cases, presentations (for example, self-presentation or presentation of some product), etc.

The first thing that assessors pay attention to during the assessment is your ability to work in a team. You need to show that you know how to work with other people to achieve a common goal. Also, you are required to show the ability to achieve results, good communication skills, perseverance, dedication and optimism.

Job interview at Kraft Heinz

The final job interview is the last stage of selection, but the most responsible one. It is after the last face-to-face interview that the decision on your employment will be made.

You should prepare yourself for questions about your education, professional experience, project experience, your motivation and career plans. We recommend that you ask your own clarifying questions – this is appreciated by employers.

Interview questions can sound like this:

  • Share a situation in which you did something unusual and had a positive impact on the work of others.
  • What is your five-year career plan and how are you going to accomplish it with Heinz-Kraft.
  • What are your biggest accomplishments so far?
  • Tell us about a situation where you took a big risk.

The questions can be very diverse, but if you have already had to participate in job interviews before, then you already know how to answer. In questions about situations from your past experience, specific answers about how you were able to solve a problem and gain new experience are especially appreciated. In such responses, we recommend using the STAR model – situation, task, action, result.
